Annual report 2024

Organization

[redigér]
Financial statement of Wikimedia Denmark for 2023-2024.

Wikimedia Denmark is an organization in Denmark that supports Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. The board of five persons had been elected on the September 2023 at the general assembly[1] and throughout 2024 had board meetings at approximately monthly intervals, usually online using Google Meet. The board was elected again in September 2024 at the General Assembly 2024. The chairman, Finn Årup Nielsen, continued on the post.

Wikimedia Denmark has a small and healthy economy with no staff. Income comes via member fees and the organization has had few expenses.

Wikimedia Denmark is a chapter in Wikimedia movement and the chapter is a member of the umbrella organizations Wikimedia Europe and the Danish organization OpenDenmark. We have also had online connections with affiliates from Northern Europe.

Reponse to legislation

[redigér]

A Wikimedia Denmark boardmember responded to proposed Danish legislation about copyright.[2] The boardmember responded in the capacity of a university researcher in Open Heritage data, but the response to the legislation were in line with the concerns that Wikimedia Denmark has/had. For instance, the clarification of the copyright on photographs of artifacts that is no longer covered by copyright. This has particularly relevance for photographs of paintings where the artist has been dead for more the seventy years.

Events

Sign at the SMK Fridays event: "Wiki Labs Culture - Rediscovery, rewriting - and coffee"

Throughout the year Wikimedia Denmark has co-organized editathons ("skrivestuer") within the framework of Wiki Labs Kultur (Wiki Labs Culture). They have been organized together with Copenhagen cultural institutions and held for several years.

During the first half of 2024 we had three writing sessions at The Workers Museum in Copenhagen (Arbejdermuseet). They were a continuation of a series on that museum started in 2023 and focused on female workers.[3] The series continued in the second half of 2024 and included a session at the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen focused on the exhibition "Against All Odds – Historical Women and New Algorithms. 31 August – 8 December 2024".[4] The exhibition focused on female visual artists, mainly painters, from the Nordic countries. This resulted in an anchor article on the Danish Wikipedia about the exhibition itself[5] as well as extension or creation of articles about the female artists featured in the exhibition. The onsite Wiki Labs Kultur meetings have been well-attended and successful, where new Wikipedians join and people attending previous meetings are attending again. We usually start with a brief introduction to Wikipedia for newcomers and after that start editing in groups or individually. A set of articles to work on is suggested and the cultural institution provides sources, mostly books, that the editors can use to source the Wikipedia articles. We give away free (physical) badges after participation. The events are free (gratis) but require registration. The cultural institutions provide space and refreshments. New Wiki Labs Kultur events have been schedule for 2025.

The Wiki Labs Kultur event in August 2024 on the National Gallery of Denmark coincided with SMK Fridays, that is a special event at that gallery with art, talks, music and drinks. The editathon took place in the hallway, meaning that SMK Fridays participants that knew nothing of Wiki Labs Kultur could come and exerience an editathon and get information about Wikipedia.

Less succesful has been the online Wiki Labs Kultur meetings via Google Meet where it has been mostly established Wikipedians that join and fairly few in numbers. This has led us to discontinue the online meetings.

To get an overview of the amount of work and Wikimedians associated with the event Wikimedia Denmark has utilized the Event Metrics tool at the Wmcloud.[6] This has been going on since 2022. Our statistics may not be complete but for the data we recorded for 2024, we have data for seven individual events that shows we had between 8 to 17 participants editing each time.

Fire at Børsen

Carrying the large Krøyer painting away from the burning Børsen building

A historic landmark building in central Copenhagen, Børsen, burned in April 2024. A highly valuable large painting by P.S. Krøyer was saved from the burning building. Back in May 2016, Wikipedians together with the Danish Chamber of Commerce, that occupies the building, had an event in Børsen, "Wikidag på Børsen", where photos were taken of the interior, including some areas that were usually inaccessible for outsiders. Some of these were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons where there is a dedicated category for the event.[7] This included a photo of the Krøyer painting taken by seasoned Wikipedian and photographer Villy Fink Isaksen and it is now labeled as a quality image.[8] Isaksens photo was used on several newssites.[9] Other photos from the event show parts of the building that no longer exists.
